Fears of a virus that has killed at least 26 children in China gripped parents in Beijing as officials on Tuesday temporarily closed two kindergartens amid a spreading outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease. The health scare prompted the Foreign Ministry to seek to assure the country it was doing its best to contain the outbreak.
"The Chinese government is paying great attention to the virus and related departments are taking effective measures to stop it from spreading," ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference. The number of children infected in the kindergartens has not been confirmed and the sick are being examined to find out what kind of virus triggered the outbreak, Xinhua quoted the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention as saying.

Twee vertegenwoordigers van de dalai lama overleggen vandaag met de Chinese autoriteiten. Het is de eerste officiële ontmoeting sinds in maart in Tibet gewelddadigheden uitbraken. Het doel van het gesprek is de rust in Tibet terug te brengen. President Hu Jintao van China is hoopvol over een positieve uitkomst.
Het overleg wordt gehouden in Shenzhen en duurt naar verwachting twee dagen. Er zijn inhoudelijk nog geen details naar buiten gebracht. China zegt dat de dalai lama het brein is achter de protesten in Tibet. Ook zou hij de Olympische Spelen willen ondermijnen.

The Olympic flame arrived in Australia on Wednesday for the next leg of the torch relay and was immediately whisked away to a secret location to avoid anti-China protesters. Meanwhile in Nepal, authorities forced a mountain climber with a "Free Tibet" banner in his bags off Mount Everest, which Chinese climbers carrying the Olympic torch plan to ascend next month. Criticism of China's human rights record has turned the torch relay into one of the most contentious in recent history. Anti-Chinese protests have dogged stops in Greece, Paris, London and San Francisco. Many countries, including Australia, have responded by modifying routes and boosting security.
Yard-high fences were being erected along the route through the Australian capital, Canberra, where 80 runners will carry the torch on Thursday. The torch will thread along a 10-mile route that passes Parliament House and within 200 yards of the Chinese Embassy. Hundreds of police will guard the torch to prevent the type of interruptions that have marked the relay in other cities in the flame's global journey to the Beijing Olympics in August. The flame arrived at an air base in Canberra from Indonesia and was greeted by government and Olympic officials and Aboriginal elder Agnes Shea, who said she hoped the torch's stay would symbolize "good will for all mankind". Eerst leek het erop dat hij er niet zou komen, maar begin deze week werd een Chinese aanval op de website van CNN toch steeds heviger. Op het hoogtepunt van de aanval kregen servers van CNN ongeveer 100MB/s aan troep te verwerken. Dat was genoeg om de site te vertragen. "Een aanval van een redelijke omvang," noemt Jose Nazario het. Nazario is senior beveiligingsanalist bij Arbor Networks. "Maar op een wereldwijde schaal gezien valt het wel mee". De hackers zijn boos vanwege de pro-Tibetaanse en anti-Chinese houding van de nieuwszender. Zo omschreef CNN-commentator Jack Cafferty de Chinezen als 'een stelletje schurken', en deed hij Chinese producten af als 'met lood vergiftigde troep'. De internetaanval stond in eerste instantie gepland voor 19 april, maar werd afgeblazen omdat te veel mensen ervan op de hoogte waren. Een aanvaller genaamd CN-Magistrate werd het koud onder de voeten: "Er weten teveel mensen vanaf. De situatie is chaotisch". Zijn website ging daarna offline, en CN-Magistrate verdween uit het zicht. China condemned on Tuesday Paris's decision to make the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen, warning that the gesture had damaged ties with France just as both nations were seeking to ease bad blood over protests. Relations between France and China were strained by Tibet protests that disrupted the passage of the Beijing Olympic Games torch through Paris earlier this month. Op de populaire Chinese website Taobao.com zijn sinds afgelopen zondag T-shirts te koop met opschriften als: 'I love Tibet, but I hate Dalai Lama', 'Fuck CNN' of 'I love China more than ever'. De T-shirts kosten slechts 28 yuan per stuk (ongeveer 2,5 euro) en worden binnen drie dagen overal in China bezorgd.
Het lijkt erop dat de Chinezen eindelijk eens wat doen. Een tegen boycot. Jammer dat het hele gedoe omtrend de mensenrechten hierbij wordt vergeten.

Met de aankomst van de zogeheten Tibetan Freedom Torch is zondagochtend 20 april op de NDSM-werf in Amsterdam het festival Ticket for Tibet van start gegaan. Tweede Kamerlid Femke Halsema (GroenLinks) nam de fakkel rond 11.30 uur in ontvangst uit handen van twee Tibetaanse hardlopers. Ook was er een traditionele Tibetaanse welkomstceremonie. De atleten waren anderhalf uur eerder met de fakkel vertrokken vanaf het Olympisch Stadion. Daar was in februari nog de officiële toorts van de Olympische Spelen in China te zien.
De organisatie van het festival wil protesteren tegen de bezetting van Tibet door China en de aandacht vestigen op de Tibetaanse cultuur. Artiesten als Racoon, Blof, Postman en Heideroosjes treden op. Ook zijn er debatten met politici als Hans van Baalen (VVD) en Harry van Bommel (SP). Verder kunnen bezoekers Tibetaanse hapjes eten en kennis maken met de levenswijze van de Tibetanen.
Stichting Vluchteling lanceert op het festival het Brouwer Fons voor Tibetaanse vluchtelingen, vernoemd naar verzetsheld en oprichter van de stichting Kees Brouwer. Daarbij is ook voormalig vertegenwoordiger van de Tibetaanse regering in ballingschap Wangchuk Tsering aanwezig. Het festival heeft plek voor maximaal 10.000 bezoekers. Voor aanvang waren er al 7500 kaartjes over de toonbank gegaan. Het door artiesten die op het festival optreden gemaakte nummer 'Als Je Ooit Nog Eens Terug Kan' kwam vrijdag overigens binnen op nummer 1 van de Top 100 Single Charts!

China has urged its citizens to be calm amid further anti-Western protests in the country, focused on French supermarket chain Carrefour. The official Communist Party newspaper, the People's Daily, said patriotism should be expressed rationally. The protesters have been angered by disruption of the Olympic torch relay in Paris and London. They also accuse the West of supporting Tibetan separatists, and the Western media of bias.
The official Xinhua news agency said more than 1,000 people carrying banners had gathered in front of a Carrefour store in the city of Xian, and there were also protests in Harbin and Jinan. Xinhua added that police were monitoring the demonstrations in the three cities, which remained peaceful. The protests came after Saturday saw hundreds of people demonstrating in cities including Beijing, Wuhan, Hefei, Kunming, and Qingdao - often outside Carrefour stores. Protesters denounced French President Nicolas Sarkozy's refusal to confirm whether he would attend the opening ceremony of the Games. Read more here.
